Leo Contini: Measures

Opening 16.7.24

The exhibition reveals the complex and special world of the Italian-Israeli artist Leo Contini Lampronti. An engineer, an artist, a man of body and soul. "measures refer to both the physical measurements - calculations of height, distance and depth, as well as the spiritual measures and actions of the person.

Alongside the artist's impressive body of work, which was recently donated to the museum, additional items from the museum's collection, as well as items from Kibbutz Naan's "laboratory" collection, will be displayed.

Our thanks go to the friends of Beit Italia, Jaffa, for their support in preparing the exhibition.

Jerusalem Biennale

Opening 14.3.24

The Jerusalem Biennale arrives in the museum of Italian Jewish Art! We are proud to host not one, not two, but three exhibitions!

Threading explores the rich reservoir of cultural assets created by Jewish women, with an emphasis on textile arts as both medium and metaphor, highlighting fabrics as material and techniques such as weaving and embroidery as visual motifs. In the exhibition, works by seven contemporary artists are displayed in conversation with pieces from the museum's collection.

The exhibition Behind the Mask presents the interpretations and the variety of possible contexts for reading the Book of Esther, which allows us to feel, even today, with vivid passion and interest, the relevance of this book to our history as a nation and as women.

For the artist presenting in seeds of memory, memories are tangible raw material. Five bodies of work, five memories, five techniques. Each technique and each material has a different way to remember and recall. The works invite you to come closer and observe. This is an attentive art, a feminine ability to see in the seemingly small thing, its full size and power.

The exhibition Out of Sight directs the observer's view inwards – towards the museum's own collection – shedding light on the museum's historical undertaking to assemble items, on their documentation and curatorship, and on the exhibitions that it has hosted over the years. Museums that focus on Jewish art, ethnography, and Jewish history generally present traditional perceptions of the ways in which identity, culture and material and visual culture are displayed. The exhibition Out of Sight seeks to challenge these perceptions, to speculate, to ask questions, and even to propose alternative ways in which it is possible and fitting to present the stories of Italian Jewry to the public at large.

We are surrounded by symbols. Thousands of signs, commercial logos and flags surround us every day. We only need see the logo of a car company or a fashion brand, in order to evoke in us strong feelings and resolute thoughts towards the product that this symbol represents. The role of symbols in the Jewish world is not absent either, and we find them in Jewish art from its inception to the present day. However, among the Jews of Italy a rather unique custom has developed - the adoption of family symbols. T

The exhibition "Family Matters" provides a glimpse into some of the most unique characteristics of this phenomenon, as well as some of its social and cultural implications.

The exhibition leads the visitors on a journey following the various meanings and expressions of the crown. A crown is used to adorn the books of the Torah, and to emphasize the importance and centrality of the Torah in Jewish life, but it is also the crown of the priesthood and the crown of the kingdom, as well as another lesser known crown of Shem Tov. The exhibition traces the various crowns and tells their story. The Jews of Italy, who were influenced by the Italian visual culture, harnessed the values of Italian art and aesthetics in order to produce sacred utensils of exceptional artistic quality.
